Coventry Park- It was way, way back on May 21st when the skies opened up and heavy rain forced the game between the Hurtin' Units and the Beer Bros to be cancelled and rescheduled. This game was the makeup game, and it was a bit of a strange one, at least on the score sheet. Coming into this game, the Units were averaging around 14 runs per game, and our lowest run total in a single game was 4. What the heck happened here??? Over our last 2 games, we scored 44 runs in total, and that was over 10 innings. What the heck happened here??? We played 7 full innings in this game and came away with 2 runs. All I can think is we're in Bizzaro World for this game.
The weather for this game was comfortable; it was 28 degrees during the day, but by game time, clouds and cool air had moved into town. There were times during the game when we felt droplets of rain, but nothing significant came down. At game time, the Units had 8 players in Units' uniforms, and we picked up Todd Mc. as a sub. Mike G. was not there for the start, but showed up 5 minutes into the game. Missing from this game were Kevin, Matt and Fabio. Both teams shared the score-keeping duties, and the Units were the home team. Jim R. got his T.O.T. debut pitching in the 35+ division. The Beer Bros. had 3 subs: Nick S., Simon S., and Andrew B.
Al Bales was in attendance, but said he wasn't playing. For those who don't know, Al Bales broke his hip last Tuesday night playing on C#2. He had hip replacement surgery and is already up and moving. Great to see him out for this game!!
In the first inning, the Bros. sent 5 batters to the plate, and MJ and Dave S would come in to score. At the bottom, Mike G. was supposed to lead off, but wasn't there yet. Mike B would lead us off and fly out, Mike D. would do the same, and Kyle would follow them with an out. These guys don't get out often, and I don't think I've ever seen all 3 players out in the same inning. Bizzaro night. In the top of the second inning, I don't know what the heck happened, the score-sheet was a little messy, the Beer Bros. scored 4 runs with a little help from their subs. In the bottom of the inning, ( the score-sheet was just as bad on the home side), the Units sent 5 batters to the plate and Pete would be the only runner to come home. Hooray, the Units are on the score-sheet. The score after 2 complete innings, the Hurtin' Units 1, the Beer Bros 6.
In the third inning ( yes, something happened in the 3rd inning), the Beer Bros sent 5 batters to the plate, but no runs came in. In the bottom, the Units had a chance to get back in the game, Todd (sub) would come in to score, but that would be all. The Units left runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd to end the inning. In the fourth inning (yes, something happened in the 4th, not much, but something), the Beer Bros would score a single run, and according to the messy score-sheet, the Units went down 1,2,3, although I only see 2 outs. The score at the end of 4 innings, Beer Bros 7, Hurtin' Units 2.
In the fifth inning, ( nothing really happened), the Bros sent 4 batters up, 3 were out. The Units sent 4 batters up, 3 were out. In the sixth inning ( more excitement in this snooze fest), the Beer Bros when down quickly, but in the home half, Mike D., started with a double, Kyle would single for an RBI, Brad would fly out, Pete would hit into a fielders choice to get Kyle out and Mike G., would fly out to end the rally.
In the open inning, the Beer Bros would send 5 batters to the plate. Carl would fly out, Paul would be thrown out, Dave M. would hit a single, Nick S. would also single, Simon would hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Dave out and ending the inning. In the bottom of the inning, (last kick at the can for the Home team), Harley would lead off, getting thrown out, Jimmer would fly out, and Todd (sub) would fly out to end the game. Make the final 7-3 for the Beer Bros.
The Hurtin' Units' next game is Thursday August 7th, vs. The Draft Kings.
