Hurtin' Units Scary Good Against the Devils.

Game # 3 May 27th, 2025

Hurtin' 'Units win 18-7

Team Record – 3-0-0

Coventry Park- It's hard to believe it's been almost 2 weeks since the Units were last on the field. On May 14th, the Units took on the Twisters and came out on top by a score of 21-10. Last week we were scheduled to play on Wednesday (May 21st), but heavy rains and soggy diamonds forced the games to be cancelled. I'm actually glad the game last week was cancelled because the Units were down 4 players and although we had subs lined up, I prefer to play with our own guys. Missing from last week were Matt, Mike B, Mike D, and Fabio N. The rained out game vs. The Beer Bros was supposed to be the home opener for the Units. The makeup game against the Beer Bros has already rescheduled for later in the season.

I mentioned that the home opener for the Units will have to wait, for this game vs. The Gruesome Devils the Units were again the visitors. At game time the Units had 11 players in uniform ready to take on the Devils, the only missing body was Peter H, who was under the weather. Speaking of the weather, this game was perfect for ball, the temperature was around 19 degrees with a soft breeze and clear skies. The umpire for this game was Brad W. (coming out of retirement), the game was a 9:20pm start.

There are game when teams get off to a slow start and recover. I thought this was going to be one of those games. In the first inning, the visiting Units went down rather quickly, 6 batters, 1 run and 3 outs. Fortunately, the Gruesomes did almost the same thing, 5 batters, 2 hits and 3 outs. In the second inning, the bottom of the Units order came out swingin' and when the dust settled the Units had put up 4 more runs. In the bottom of the second inning, the Gruesomes were not going away, they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 4 runs also. The third inning saw the Units score a single run and the Devils went down quickly, 4 batters, 3 outs and no runs. At the end of 3 innings, the Units lead by a score of 6-4.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Units tacked on another single run, and the Devils
went down again with 4 batters, 3 outs and no runs. I the fifth inning, the Units middle and bottom of the order came up with some big hits and the Units added 4 more insurance runs. The Units defence was solid all game and in the 5th it was the same as the previous 2 innings, 4 batters, 3 outs, no runs. The sixth inning saw the Units add on 3 more runs coming again from the middle of the order. In the bottom of the inning, the Devils sent up 4 batters, 3 got outs, but not before a in the park homerun, to right field by Steve B. The score after 6 complete innings was 13-5 for the Units.

Unlike our previous 2 games we managed to get 7 innings in, and in the top of the open inning, the Units top of the order, showed the bottom and middle what they were capable of doing, the top of the order showed their power with 6 hits and 4 runs with an added run from the bottom, 5 more runs added to the scoresheet. In the bottom, the Devils would score 2 more runs and make the final 18-7 for the Units.

I was really impressed with the defence in this game, we bent a couple of times, but we stayed strong and didn't break. The offence got off to a slow start in this game, but with 2 outs we always seemed to rally and score some runs. Kevin's perfect batting record came to an end, going only 4 for 5 on the night. Matt went 5 for 5 on the night, Fabio was crushing the ball and went 4 for 4, Mike B hit an in the park homerun and went 3 for 5, Kyle actually had a quiet night going 2 for 5, Mike D went 4 for 5 and in total we had 32 hits on the night.

The Hurtin' Units next game is Monday June 2nd at 7:00pm at Keogh Park. This game will be the official home opener of the season.
