Hurtin' Units vs. The Bat Flippers.
Game # 8 – June 17th, 2025
Hurtin' Units Lose 12-7
Team Record – 4-4-0
Coventry Park It's been a busy week and I haven't even had a chance to post anything about the Gamblers game last Thursday night. It's tough to believe that we are already 8 games into the season and the standings are starting to show the top teams, the middle-of-the-pack group and the weaker teams. There are some teams that have been rained out (usually the teams that play on Wednesdays), so it's a little more difficult to determine where they should be. As of today, the Bat Flippers are back on top with a record of 6-1-1 and the Hurtin' Units have dropped to the middle of the pack. For this, we played the Bat Flippers and the Units looked good in the early innings.
The weather for this game was good, the temperature at 9:15 pm was 19 degrees with a soft breeze and clearing skies. At game time the Units had all 12 guys dressed to play, a good night for a team picture. The umpire was the skinny guy (I don't know his name, but he seemed to be in a hurry to get out of there and called the open in less than an hour), Kelly was the scorekeeper (sorry Kelly about the messy score sheet, I should have rewritten it) and the game started at 9:20 pm on Coventry # 2.
The Units got off to a strong start and in the first inning scored 2 runs to take an early lead. The Flippers were kept off the scoresheet in the bottom of the first inning. Neither team could score in the second inning. In the third inning, the Units tacked on another 2 runs and would shut down the high-powered offence of the Flippers.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Units' bats would hit the ball all around the diamond and score
another 3 runs. In the bottom of the fourth, the shutout was broken and Flipper's bats came to life, they would send 8 batters to the plate and 5 would come around to score. The score after 4 complete innings was Units 7, Bat Flippers 5.
In the fifth inning, Kyle would lead off with a triple and he would be stranded at third, as Mike B. popped out, Matt flew out and Mike D. also popped out. I think this was the moment when we knew we were in some trouble. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Flippers flipped out, they sent 9 batters to the plate, nobody got out and 7 runs came in to score. The score was now 12-7 for the Bat Flippers.
The Umpire called an open inning in the sixth (it hadn't even been an hour, maybe he wanted to get home to watch the third period), the Units came up and shit the bed, Pete would fly out, Fabio would get a base hit, Jimmy R would get thrown out and Harley would fly out, game over in less than an hour. I guess we're lucky to play 6 innings, the game before us was only 5 innings, and the score was only 16-12. The games on C1 and C3 were both still playing.
The Hurtin' Units' next game is Monday, June 23rd vs. The Brew Birds.
