Game # 17 - July 29th, 2024
Hurtin' Units vs. Tap Monsters (This was a makeup game).
Hurtin' Units – Lose 25-11
Team Record - 5-12-0
Keogh Park– I need to give a shout-out to David Connolly, the schedule is a nightmare for even the easiest of weeks, and when we have rain-outs or cancellations it is a full-blown horror movie to piece the games back together. David is like the Dr. Frankenstein of our scheduling, he takes all the cancelled pieces and rebuilds a schedule. Last week, all the Tuesday night games (July 23) were cancelled as lightning and thunderstorms flashed through the dark, spooky skies; The Unit's 9:15 pm game vs. The Tap Masters was one of those games that was cancelled. By Thursday, July 25th, David had rescheduled the Tap Masters vs. Hurtin' Units game for Monday, July 29th at 9:30pm. “IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE,” I think he told us when it was rescheduled. It's frightening to even think about how difficult it is to reschedule 6 games, David you are an evil genius, keep up the good work.
The weather for this game was perfect (I thought it was perfect) the temperature was over 30 degrees during the day with clear skies, and by 9:30pm the temperature had dropped down to around 25 degrees and it was a comfortable night for baseball. At game time the Units had almost a full team, 10 guys dressed in Unit's white and no subs on the night. Alex (Whitey) and Justin were the only missing bodies.
We knew this game was going to be a tough one, the Tap Masters are near the top of the standings (2nd) and their lineup is packed top to bottom with hard hitters.
This game didn't start until 9:50 pm, 20 minutes late, mainly because the game before was such a barn burner. In the open inning of the 8:15 pm game, the Gruesomes were down 14-4, they scored 12 runs, in the top of the inning, to take a 2 run lead, only to have Dodge City come back, score 3 runs, in the bottom of the inning, to win the game. I'm glad the umpire let them play out the inning, and not go back to the inning before, even through Dodge won anyway. It was a big come-back by the Gruesomes who almost pulled it off. “ Missed it by that much”.
The Tap Masters had their full line-up, 12 guys all ready to bash the ball around the park. And bash they did. They Tappers had 40 hits on the night and Neil P only went 2 for 5. Four of their guys, in the middle of the order all went 4 for 4. The Tappers hit hard and they hit often, I would not be surprised to see them take top spot over the next few games. The sad thing is they only play the Rebels once this season and it's almost at the end, that game might decide the regular season winners. The Inglorious and Draft Kings might have a few things to say about that.
I'm not going to detail this game, I'll included game sheets, but I will say it was a tough game for the Units. We didn't hit very well, and we couldn't seem to get that 3rd out when we needed it. I don't know how many times we got 2 out, on the Tappers, and couldn't finish the job allowing the Tappers to pile up more runs.
The Hurtin' Units next game is Wednesday July 31st vs. The Meatballs. “The Battle of the Basement”.
