Game # 14- July 16th, 2024
Hurtin' Units vs. Das Meatballs.
Hurtin' Units win 15-10
Team Record – 4-10-0
Coventry
Park
– For this game we find ourselves back on C1, the diamond where the
Units have had no luck this season. Until this game, we have had
very little luck on any diamond this season, but C1 seems to be a
diamond that we just can't keep the other team from piling up the
runs. This game was our first game vs. The Meatballs, who are
Captained by two guys that have both played on the Units multiple
times. They have both played on the Hurtin' Units 3 different times,
Hags in 2022, 2015, 2013 and Jens in 2010, 2018, 2019. So when we
meet on the field there is a lot of history between us. Jens was on
the Units in 2010 (our first season) and we won the league that year.
Hags was on the Units when we won the championship in 2022. I am very
fond of both the Meatball captains, they are fun guys and I had been
looking forward to playing their team for quite awhile. My niece's
boyfriend is also on the team, but last week he broke his arm and is
done for the season. Take care Matt.
The weather for this game was... wait I don't have to include it because I took a picture for the post. But I should mention it rained all morning, stopping around 1pm and surprisingly the field was quite good for this game.
At game time the Units had 10 players ready to take on the balls. The Units were the home team, the umpire was unknown (Lady in blue) and Nicole H was the scorekeeper. Thanks Nicole and Lady in Blue. The game was played on C1. No subs... HOORAY!!
Game Time:
I looked at the standings on Wednesday morning and it felt good to see the Units were not sitting at the bottom for the first time in a long time. Being out of last place may be a short-lived thing, but psychologically this feels really good and we will take the win.
In the top of the first inning, the Meatballs scored 3 runs, but the Units sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 4 runs to win the inning. In the second the Meatballs would score single run and the Units, in the bottom, went down 4 batters later. The game was tied after two complete innings.
In the top of the third inning, the Balls sent 6 batters up and only managed to score once. The Units weren't any better in the bottom, sending 4 batters up and scoring a single run. In the fouth inning, the Meaties went down 1,2,3 on some stellar defense by the Units. In the bottom of the fourth, the Units first 2 batters would get out, Porter would hit a single, Cookie would hit a single and we back to the top of the order, scoring 4 runs with 2 outs.
In the top of the fifth, Matt hit a towering homerun over the right field fence leading off, but the Units regrouped and got out of the inning with only the one run. In the bottom, Justin led off with a single, Jimmer and Roger would get out, it was looking like a fast inning, Porter then hit a single, Cookie got a single and we were back at the top again. Alex D, Jamie, Brandon, Alex W. and Peter all had hits before Justin was back at bat. Justin would be the third out, but the Units scored 6 runs all with 2 out. The score after 5 complete innings, Units 15 – Meatballs 6.
In the sixth inning, the Meatballs scored 2 more runs. In the bottom, the Units had 2 singles and 3 outs and it was on to the 7th inning. In the top of the 7th inning, the Meatballs would not go away, Matt and Lucas both hit doubles led off, they both scored, Dennis would get out, Andrew, Dave, Howie and Gord would all hit singles, but Andrew was tagged out at third for the second out. The bases were loaded for Steve H., Steve would take a big swing for a strike, the second pitch he swung hard and foul tipped the ball into Cookie's glove for the final dramatic out of the game. Units would end their 7 game losing streak. Final score 15-10 for the Units.
The Units next game is Wednesday July 17th at C2 vs. The Master Batters.
