Beer, Breakfast, Baseball and Baking.

“Mornings are egg-cellent when breakfast is involved.”

Game # 18 - June 18, 2024

Hurtin' Units vs. The Beer Bros.

Hurtin' Units lose 18-13

Team Record – 3-4-0

Coventry Park – For this game we find ourselves back on C #2, where we have played most of our games, including the thunderstorm-shortened game vs. The Master Batters. For me, Coventry #2 is my least liked diamond, I prefer # 3 or # 1 and most prefer playing at Keogh. This game was our first meeting with the Beer Bros. and I was looking forward to playing against these guys. I did sub as a pitcher for them on May 28 and they lost, so I guess I didn't get the call back for subbing. In that game, the Beer Bros. lost in the final inning by a score of 10-9.

Breakfast Club- Hey, Hey Hey, Hey. On Friday mornings, we have a group of guys that go out for breakfast and Paul and Al (AKA the Beer Bros.) are included in this group. This group actually started with Pete and Al and they just kept inviting people to join in, and then we started a Facebook group and now we get 10 or more diners every week. Sometimes we have special guests like Terri Mabee or the President (Dave S., not Biden). Most of the guys play in the league, Sweet Lou also attends with his weekly updates about the women's league and now that the season is in full swing it's fun discussing baseball and the games that we played earlier in the week. I'm sure there will be some pokes and fun ribbing about the Beer Bros. vs. The Hurtin' Units game this week.

The Units have two games again this week, Tuesday night vs. Beer Bros. and Wednesday night vs. The Twisters. When these 2 games are completed, we will have played 8 games and 1/3 of our season already. Where does the time go?

Game Time:

The weather this week has been stinky hot, on Monday the temperature was in the 30s and for this game, the temperature during the day went up to 33 degrees feeling like 43 according to the weather network. A strong thunderstorm rolled through Tottenham at around 5:15 pm and heavy rain came down, along with some

strong winds. By game time the temperature had climbed again and it was drying the playing surfaces out (except the batter's boxes), but we were still baking in the stinky hot temperatures.

At game time, the Units had 9 of their regular team players, we were missing Kevin, Brandon and Cookie. Alan Lacey was the scorekeeper and Roman was the umpire for this 9:15 game at Coventry Park. We played seven innings. The Units were the visitors. We picked up Dion B as a sub, thanks go out to Dion. The Beer Bros. picked up Mark M, Troy H and Kevin Moore as subs.

In the first inning, the Units went down quickly and put up a zero on the board. In the bottom of the inning, the Beer Bros scored only a single run. This game was looking like a low-scoring, heat-induced lack of hitting-night.

In the second inning, the Units scored only a single run and held the Beer Bros off the scoresheet. This was definitely going to be a low-scoring game. In the third inning, the Units hit the ball all around the diamond and with a few Beer Bros errors, the Units scored 7 more runs. In the bottom of the inning, the Beer Bros tallied another 2 runs. The score after 3 complete innings was 8-3 for the Units.

In the fourth inning, the Units went down quickly and threw a goose egg up on the scoreboard and in the bottom, the Beer Bros. would put up 5 runs to tighten the score. In the top of the fifth inning, the Units would only send 4 batters to the plate and put up another goose egg. In the bottom of the inning, the Beer Bros would not go away, they battled back sending 10 batters to the plate, and 6 runs would come in to score. The score after 5 complete innings was 14-8 for the Bros.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Units would not go down without a fight, they would storm back and score 5 huge runs to make it a one-run game. In the bottom of the inning, those pesky Beer Bros. would not go away, they would battle back and put up 4 insurance runs.

In the open inning, with the Hurtin' Units trailing by a score of 18-13 the Units would get runners on base and had a chance to get back in the game, but as luck would have it, our batting just couldn't bring the guys around to score. The Beer Bros. were the home team and did not bat. The final score was Beer Bros. 18, the Hurtin' Units 13. It looks like the Beer Bros have the bragging rights at breakfast this week.

"You see us as you want to see us… In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, a criminal and a baseball player... Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club."

The Hurtin' Units next game is June 19th vs. The Tottenham Twisters of New Tecumseth.
