GRISSLIES TAKE OFF AGAINST HURTIN UNITS.

Hurtin' Units vs. Grisslies.

Game # 5 - June 3, 2013

Hurtin' Units lose 8-7

Team Record- 2-3-0

Great White North Good day eh! Welcome to our blog. This week we have two games scheduled; the first is taking on Rob and Doug with their Grisslies team and the second versus the Johns (sounds funny, makes me want to pee, eh!) with their Blues Brothers team. This game against the Grisslies is the only game we will play against each other this season...at least in the regular season. The unbalanced schedule always means we will play against some teams only once. This is probably a good thing, the Grisslies are the one team that seems to have the Units number. Last season the Hurtin' Units played the Grisslies more than any other team in the league.  In total, we played the Grisslies 5 times in the 2012 season.

We only played the Championship winning Beer Bros. once on the entire 2012 season.

The Grisslies have gotten off to a slow this season and one wonders how long the owner of the fanchise (yes, fanchise) are going to let things continue before changes are made. I know when things were really tough with the Units last season, I went out and had the bats smudged. Are the Grisslies ready to make such a bold move?

The Hurtin' Units got off to a similiar start last season and with a 0-4-1 record in our first five games. It's tough when you get off to this kind of start, it has a tendancy to hurt the confidence of the team and makes it tougher to get back in the race. It's a battle just to get back to .500, but the great thing about our league is everyone makes the round robin portion of the playoffs and anything can happen from there. The Units never even made it back to .500 last season and we still managed to get ourselves in to the semi-finals. I'm sure that by the end of the season the Grisslies will be somewhere in the mix. And even if they`re not playing well, the beer will still taste the same eh!

The weather for this game against Rob and Doug was a wee bit chilly for baseball. The temperature was hovering around 16 degrees, there was a sun/cloud mix and a cool breeze was blowing in from left field.

At game time there were 12 Unit players (wow! a full team...nice) dressed in the black and yellow ready to take on the Grisslies.

This game reminded me of the Blue Jays last season. There were several starting pitchers on the Jays last season that would pitch well, but never got any run support. Actually, this sounds like the Units last season. Last season, the Units had 11 games where the team scored 10 runs or less, 7 games where the Units scored 5 runs or less and 6 of the 10 or less games, came in the final 10 games of the season. In this league, on most nights, if you don't score at least 10 runs your chances of victory are very slim.

Over the first 4 games the Hurtin' Units had averaged around 16 runs per game and only 2 wins to show for it. The Units could only muster up 7 runs against the Grisslies. This game against the was the Units third 1 run loss this season.

This game was the debut of the Units P2 Darrell Hager (Hags) pitching and he pitched a hell of a game holding the Grisslies to only 8 runs. An 8 run complete game, but as the final score shows, the Units could only score 7 runs and Hags would be tagged with the loss.

I don't want to spend too much time on the game story, I think the boxscore tells most of what happened. I do want to mention Mike O. hit a towering home run in to the tennis courts in right center field, I do want to mention I played left field and missed a fly ball (didn't even make contact with my flapping glove), which resulted in the Grisslies scoring a run, which in the end, was the winning run of the game.

There was also a funny at bat by a Hurtin' Unit player; the batter (not saying who) hit a fowl ball toward the road, a vehicle was sitting at the stop sign, the ball hit the vehicle on the front hood, the driver of the vehicle was Dennis Short. In the same at bat, the batter hit the ball back to Rob F. pitching, Rob almost caught the line drive, but the ball went in to the air, Rob bobbled the ball several times before it hit the ground, the runner was safe at first.

I think Hags pitched really well and I'm now interested in what this rookie is capable of doing on the diamond. Ricky Bobby is close to going back into the outfield and this could really change the look of our defense. A 2-3 team record is still decent and with a little winning streak we could quickly soar to the top of the standings. Where we sit in the standings is not as important as being competitive in every game, and we have been competitive in all of our first 5 games.

Post game some of the Unit players (8) went back to the Legion for a couple of jugs and I brought a tray of salsa with a bag of nachos to munch on. We crunched down the nachos and guzzled the beer  while we shared some stories about the game.

There were also some pee your pants
stories told and we laughed until it hurt sometimes, but I think some of the most entertaining moments came when the discussion about sock puppets was introduced. This is a crazy, fun group of guys and I think we are in for a outrageously entertaining summer. But not are we only a fun group of guys, we are also a talented bunch of baseball players and when we play to our potential we are going to win some games and climb in the standings. I look forward to our next game. Units Unite!!
