2019 SEASON IN A NUTSHELL.

LET THE GAMES OF THE 2019 SEASON BEGIN.

Game # 1- May 7th, 2019 vs. the Master Batters.

Hurtin' Units lose 11-7.   Units were visitors.

Team Record- 0-1-0

Coventry Park - Opening night on the season: I thought we played a really good game, our batting was a bit weak, but that should be expected in the first game of the season. There were a lot of guys who were playing in new defensive positions. Good game to start the season. Missing Albert and Mark for this one.

Game # 2- May 16th vs. the Inglorious Batsters.

Hurtin' Units win 12-9.  Units were the visitors.

Team Record-1-1-0

Keogh Park - In this game is where our defense really started to take shape, we were solid on the field. I changed the batting lineup a little bit from the first game and we put together a nice run to score 12 runs. Welcome to the win column Hurtin' Units. Missing from this game were Albert, Mark and Chris, we had Craig (Dude) as a sub.

Game # 3- May 21st, 2019 vs. the Tap Masters.

Hurtin' Units lose 20-18.  Units were Home team.

Team Record-1-2-0

Coventry 2 - In this game I changed the batting order a little bit more; I moved Jens down from 2 to 5 so Rob H. wasn't chasing his ass around the bases. Changing the order and having the complete lineup really got our batting going, we would score runs in every inning to the tune of 18 solid runs. Our defense was also playing well, we only allowed 7 runs over 6 innings.

Going in to the top of the 7th inning, the Units had an 18-7 lead and this game in the bag, easy peasy ad it to the win column. Bang, bang, bang, bang...the Tap Masters (last years champions) had come back and scored 13 runs and had taken a 20-18 lead. The Units would have the home half of the 7th inning to mount a comeback, but I it was not to be, the Units went down quickly and we were shocked by this loss. This was a tough loss to take, hopefully we will learn from this experience and use it in future games. Full team playing this game. Albert and Mark first games, both looked good.

Game # 4 - May 23rd vs. Dusty Cleats.

Hurtin' Units win 16-8.  Units were visitors.

Team record - 2-2-0

Keogh Park - Coming in to this game I think a bunch of Unit players were still thinking about the loss 2 days before against the Tap Masters. It was a heartbreaker of a game and one we will probably not let slip away like that again. Pete and I discussed what we might do if we ever find ourselves in that situation again. There was a moment in the Tap Master game when I was going to walk Rob R. to take a chance at the next batter, but I didn't do it and we will never know... That game is gone and all we can do is take the experience and apply it to future games.

In this game we were up against the only team that had not lost a game yet this season. Pete and I had it circled on our mental calendars and were looking forward to the challenge. We always like to play teams to gauge how our team stacks up.

The Units did not disappoint, we came out with strong defense and our bats were popping from the start of the game. The Units would score runs in every inning. The only disappointment on the night was the game was called in the 5th inning (not sure why, we had not even played an hour), but that played in our favor and we would whether the Cleats final push, in the bottom of the 7th, for the victory. Missing for the Units for this night was Albert.
This game was a Beer  Cup game and the Hurtin' Units would become the holders of the Cup.

After 4 games in the season the Units find themselves sitting in 7th place in the standings.

Game # 5- May 28th vs. Beer Bros.

Hurtin' Units win 12-9. Units were the home team.

Team Record -3-2-1

Coventry 2 - It seemed like it rained the entire day, there was a light drizzle even into the evening hours. The C3 games were postponed, but the C2 games were a go. The Hurtin' Units had the 8:15pm game on C2. I thought this was our best game of the season, both defensively and offensively. We had one inning where we gave up 7 runs, but other than that inning, we were solid on the defense.

The Units offense has scored more in other games, but giving the Beer Bros. some credit for defending, we took advantage of our opportunities and scored when we had the chance. When the Beer Bros. scored 7 runs, the Units scored 7 runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Units were defending the Beer Cup for the first time and we pulled out a big win to keep the title of Beer Cup holders.

There was one play that I had to kick the ball to first for the out, the only play really had. The outfield made some key catches for big outs. Kurt, Jens and Chris had several big plays on the infield.

The offense was good, but I don't think we have hit our stride yet. Albert hit the ball hard, with nothing to show for it. Kyle hit the ball and had the speed to make it safely to base most times. The bottom of our order started the 7 run inning, with the bottom 3 players getting on. We were missing Rob H. on this night. Good game Units!!

Game # 6- May 30th vs the Grisslies.

Hurtin' Units lose 11-10. Units were the visitors in this game.

Team Record-3-3-0

Keogh Park - This game was another one of those heartbreakers, that we seem to be having a bit more than usual this season. Looking back at our season so far, we could honestly be 6-0, we lost our first a game by 11-7, but had ample opportunities to score more than 7 runs. Our second lost we had the 18-7 lead, going into the 7th, and coughed up a 13 run inning to lose and in this game against the Grisslies we had a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of the 6th, gave up 7 runs, scored nothing in the top of the 7th inning and allowed the Grisslies to score the tying and winning runs with 2 out.

The Hurtin' Units defense was stellar in this game (at least until the 6th inning), only allowing the Grisslies potent offense 2 runs. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Jason Candy hit a 2 run blast in to the tennis courts at Keogh.

This game was a Beer Cup defend and we could not hold on to the title. Hopefully, we will get another shot at the cup.

Game # 7 - June 03 vs. the Dogcatchers.

Hurtin' Units win 18-13. Units were visitors in this game.

Team Record-4-3-0

Keogh Park - This game was one of only two 7:00pm starts so far this season. The Hurtin' Units got off to a good start in the top of the 1st inning, highlighted by a Kurt P. homerun into the tennis courts. In the bottom of the first inning, on my very first pitch, Skippy hit a line drive and nailed me in the right arm. Ouch! that f#@$%&#  hurt. I continued on and we got out of the inning with no runs scored.

The Units offense was clicking pretty good on this night and we scored runs in almost every inning. Kurt just missed hitting for his second homerun when the ball hit the top of the fence.

The Units defense was also playing well. The outfield was busy and made numerous catches. Kyle was good for a couple of catches in right field, one catch was a solid line drive that got out there very quickly. Nice game defense.

Albert was playing in this game, and was quite entertaining. He had a leg injury, but ran at 110% chugging around the bases with reckless abandon. He also hit the ball well, best I've seen from him this season. He struggled a little in the outfield (mostly because of the leg injury), but still managed to make some good catches.

Going into the open inning, we had a 18-5 lead and this time our defense shut the door. Kurt got the first out and then Justin (who played 2nd base all night), snagged a ground ball, touched 2nd base for a force play, threw to first for a double play to end the game.

Missing from this game were Rob H. and Chris B.

Game # 8 - June 13th vs. the Hottub Woodies.

Hurtin" Units win 15-14. Units were the visitors (again) in this game.

Team Record - 5-3-0

Keogh Park- I did not think that this game was going to get played on this day. At 5:30pm, the skies opened up and heavy rains came down along with flashes of lightening and loud booms of thunder, there was no way we were playing. At 7:00pm the game for the Draft Kings and the Rebels was a go. It looked like we would be playing. By our game time, the sky had some blue trying to come through and the diamond conditions were rapidly improving.

We were the visiting team again on this night. In the top of the first inning, the Units scored 7 runs to take an early lead, capped off by a 3 run homerun from Peter H. over the left field fence. The Woodys would score a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning.

The two teams traded runs through the rest of the game, the Units did have a bad inning and game score got close. In the top of the open inning (7th) the Units scored 2 runs to take a 15 -14 lead. In the bottom of the open inning, the Units defense came up big vs. the top of the Woodys order. The first batter would fly out to Anthony, the second batter hit to Justin at first, hitting the glove, Justin would stay with it and recover to first for the out, the third batter got on and the next batter would hit a hard ball to Kurt, Kurt to second for the force out and that was the game. The Hurtin' Units would hold on for the victory.

Missing from this game were Jens, Rob H. and Albert P., we picked up Rob McCarron as a sub for the game.

The Units play the same team on June 18th at Coventry Park.

Game # 9 - June 18th vs. the Hottub Woodies.

Hurtin' Units win 23-18. Units were the Home team in this game.

Teams Record - 6-3-0

Coventry 3- For the first time this season we played on the Coventry 3 diamond and at the beginning of the game, it didn't look like we were going to enjoy this night. We were the home team in this game, a rare thing this season, and in the top of the inning, the Woodys gave the Hurtin' Units a good ole fashion as whoopin'. The HT Woodys would score seven runs without the Hurt.in' Units getting an out. In the home half the Units would strike back with 2 runs.

In the 2nd inning, the Units luck was almost as bad, the Woodys kept pounding the ball all around the park. The Units managed to get 2 outs, but by that time the Woodys had scored another 7 runs. In the bottom of the 2nd the Units bats came to life and scored 6 runs, stranding the 7th at 3rd base.

Over the next 3 innings, the Units defense came around stopping the Woodys from scoring any runs. The Units would score runs in 2 of those 3 innings. 3 runs in the 3rd inning, 5 runs in the fourth inning and zero runs in the fifth inning. The score after 5 innings was now 16-14 for the Hurtin' Units.

In the top of 6th inning, the Woodys would score 3 runs and retake the lead, but in the bottom of the inning, the Units bats would storm back and score 7 runs. The score at the end of 6 innings was 23-17 for the Units. In the top of the open inning the Woodys would only score a single run with the Units defense looking solid. Kyle made the last two catches in right field to secure the victory.

A couple of highlights in this game were Albert hitting a mammoth hit over the heads of the outfielders for 2 RBIs, Kyle hit a grounder up the middle for a big cash, Kyle 2 finishing catches, Kurt snagging a ball behind second to throw out runner at first, the Hurtin' Units over all defense in the middle innings which kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win. We would supply a catcher for the Woodys on this night.

Missing from this game were Rob H., Jens L. Great comeback Units.

Game # 10 - June 25th vs. The Rusty Rebels.

Hurtin' Units lose 20-8. Units were visitors in this game.

Team Record - 6-4-0

Game # 10 was actually supposed to be against the Draft Kings on June 20th, but on that day the skies opened up and the rain was coming down quite heavy for our 7:00pm start. The game was finally postponed and rescheduled for August 7th... yay another 9:30pm game.

This game, against the Rebels, was also a 9:30pm game and at least it wasn't a bad night for ball.

Based on everything that happened in this game, I kinda like the idea of the game being cancelled. This was the worst game the Hurtin' Units have played this season. The Rebels had played the night before and I was really hoping that they would be sore and achy going into this game. The opposite was true, the Rebels would hit hard and would hit often. The Units defense was a little (not alot) shaky giving up 20 runs on the night.

The defense was a bit off (mostly because of good hitting), but the Units offense was having a difficult time hitting Sandy's pitching.

Every team has a bad game a couple of times a season, hopefully this does not lead to the slump we had in 2018.

Game # 11 - June27th vs. The Tottenham Twisters.

Hurtin' Units lose 12-9. Units were visitors in this game.

Team Record - 6-5-0

Keogh Park-The Units were a little shaken by the beating, by the Rebels, the night before and were hoping for a better offensive and defensive game.

The Hurtin' Units got off to a good start in this game with Kurt hitting a 2 run homerun (2nd this season) in to the tennis courts. The Units would hit well scoring another 6 run inning, but the Twisters would counter with a 7 run inning and take the wind out of our sails.

The Hurtin' Units would have their chances, but couldn't cash in. The Twisters would tack on more runs and the Units couldn't seem to catch them. In the end, the Units offense was not as good as the Twisters.

The Units had a tough week and it will be reflected in the T.O.T standings. Tough to win the league from this position...but anything can happen.

Game # 12 - July 2nd vs. Bat Flippers.

Hurtin' Units lose 16-15. Units were visitors again.

Team Record - 6-6-0

Coventry Park- The Hurtin' Units have a bit of a messed up schedule this season. The games (so far) are top ended on the visitor game side, the Units have only played 3 home games this season, we have a total of 10 games at Coventry on Tuesday nights and we have 8 games on a Thursday night and we will play 6 9:30pm games on the season.

This game against the Bat Flippers was another one of those visitor games. Starting Thursday night the Units will have 5 home games in a row. There is a slight advantage to being the home team and we could have used it in this game.

This game against the Flippers was fun (as much fun as a loss can be), the game went back and forth with both teams taking the lead at times, only to have the other comeback. Both teams were top heavy in big batters and it was a good battle trying to keep them off the scoreboard. At the end of 6 innings, the score was tied.

With the score tied the Units would score 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning to take a 15-13 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Flippers would chip away and score the 3 runs they needed to win the game 16-15. The final inning was very intense, almost like a playoff game, and the Hurtin' Units came close to pulling one out. In the end, the Flippers big guns were up at the right time and managed to beat the Units. This really was a fun game.

Game # 13 - July 4th vs. Dodge City Rounders.

Hurtin' Units win 25-18. Hurtin' Units were the home team.

Team Record- 7-6-0

Keogh Park- This game was a 9:30 make up game from a rain out on  May 13th. We were also the home team which has been a rare thing so far this season. This was only our 4th home game this season.

The Rounders would take the field first and in the first inning they would score 7 runs (highlighted by a monstrous Beechy homerun), with no outs. The Units would counter in the bottom of the inning, with 4 runs. In the top of the 2nd inning, the Rounders would get 3 more hits before Roddy finally hit a towering infield pop up and I caught the ball for our first out of the night. The rounders would score 4 more runs (3 from the first 3 batters) and take a 11-4 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Units sub player Angelo would lead off and score, followed by 4 more Units runs.

In the top of  the 3rd inning, the Units defense would hold the Rounders high powered offense to only 2 runs. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Kurt would lead off with an in the park homerun, Anthony would get on with a double, and Pete would hit a a homerun, over the fence in left field. Next Units batter Jens would get on and score before the Rounders shut the door. The score at the end of 3 innings was 13-13.

In the top of the fourth inning, Dodge City would take the lead again, scoring 3 more runs. The Hurtin' Units would counter in the bottom of the inning with 5 more runs. In the 5th inning, Dodge would send 5 batters to the plate and score a single run. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Units offense put the petal to the metal and sent 8 batters to the plate, scoring 7 runs with only 1 out.

In the of the 6th inning (open inning in this game), the Rounders would send 5 batters to the plate, score only a single run and the Units defense would look solid. The Units were the home team and did not bat in the bottom of the inning.

Kurt and Pete both scored 5 runs each in this game, Jens would come in to score 4 times. Great comeback Units!!

Game #14 - July  vs the Sliders.

Hurtin' Units win 23-13. Hurtin' Units were home team.

Team Record- 8-6-0

Coventry Park- The weekend before this game was the HTKP tournament and 9  Hurtin' Units players played in the Tournament. Missing from the tournament were Chris, Albert and Rob. We were given 3 other awesome players to fill out our roster. I would personally like to thank Mike C., Winston G., and Jason B. for playing with us. These guys were really good and made major contributions to the weekend squad.

The Units played a pretty good tournament, but just couldn't seem to get by the Master Batters. In our first game we defeated the Sons of Pitches. In our second game we faced the Master Batters, in a close match, but lost by a score of 8-6. In our 3rd game we beat the Dusty Cleats to get into the top 6, in the round robin, and go on to play the Master Batters again in the quarter finals. In the quarter final game we played well enough to win and going into the bottom of the 7th inning, we had a 5 run lead. Unfortunately, we could not hold that lead and the Master Batters would come back to win the game by a 16-15 score. The Hurtin' Units tournament was over.

In the game against the Sliders we were solid defensively and our offensive was still in the weekend mode. The Sliders took an early lead, but the Units bats were firing on all cylinders and we tallied up a huge lead. The Sliders would push back in the open inning, but it would not be nearly enough to catch the Units. Good game Units.

Game #15 - July 11 vs. Master Batters. Units were the Home team.

Hurtin' Units lose 14-12

Team Record- 8-7-0

Keogh Park- For the forth time this season we get to play the Master Batters. And for the forth time this season we lose another close game. In the first game of the season, opening night for us, the Master Batters beat us by a score of 11-7. In the HTKP tournament the Master Batters beat us in the round robin by a score of 8-6, in the quarter finals the Batters beat us 18-17. So with all that being said, WE ARE DUE to beat the Batters. Right???? Wrong!!!...the Batters were once again victorious.

This game was one of those battles that we would have to fight for every inch. One of those games where every inning would be a struggle for the outs. The Hurtin' Units got down early (10-2) after 2 innings. We would peck away at the Batters lead and get very close in the score. The Units would keep pace, but would never take the lead. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning, the Units were down by only 2 runs, we would get some guys on base and we had a chance to tie it up, but Rob (who was running for me) would be thrown out at home plate to end the game.

This game was fight to keep pace with the Batters, but in the end we almost had the comeback. I'm betting we see these guys in the playoffs...We are so due for a win!!!! Not in our heads...yet. Missing from this game were Albert, Jens, Rob and Mark. Thanks to subs Angelo and Dave S.

Game #16, July 16th vs. the Grisslies.

Hurtin' Units were the home team.

Hurtin' Units lose 18-11

Team Record 8-8-0

Coventry Park-This game was my least enjoyable game of the entire season. From beginning to the end, there were things that just frustrated me in this game. The 7:00pm game was canceled and when I arrived the bases were not in, there was no hammer at the field, (I didn't bring one because we had a 8:15pm game time), so I had to scramble to borrow one from the other diamond captains. Then their was no score keeper, so the score sheet had to be walked from one dug out to the other...The game was a bit lopsided with the Grisslies picking up Neil P., and Joe L. as subs.

There were a bunch of other things that were frustrating, but not worth going into. Not a fun game, awful loss and definitely a learning experience.

Game # 17, July 22 vs. the Dodge City Rounders.

Hurtin' Units were the home team in this game.

Hurtin' Units lose 17-16.

Team Record - 8-9-0

Keogh Park- This game was our 4th game where we either lost or won by one run. Our record in 1 run games is 1-3 and we have been in several games where we lost by only 2 runs and include the 20-18 collapse against the Tap Masters we are really more competitive than our record shows.

This game was a good back and forth match, each team taking a lead and then giving it back up. In the final inning (bottom of the open) we had the winning and tying runs on 2nd and 3rd bases, 2 out and I hit an off field line drive to Darren Ford at second base to end the game. Missed it by that much, a shorter second baseman would not have gotten the ball. Another close game and another loss by a single run.

Game # 18, July 24th vs. the Tap Masters.

Hurtin' Units were the visitors in this game.

Hurtin' Units win 28-19

Team Record - 9-
Coventry Park - This game was probably our most productive of the season. I had Kyle in the lead off position and he did not disappoint. He started the game with 3 triples and I thought really set the tone for the rest of the team.

Going into the final inning we had a 28-12 lead, but there were still memories of our first game with the Tap Masters dancing in our heads. In our first game with the Tappers, we had an 18-7 lead going into the open inning, and gave up 13 runs to lose by a score of 20-18.

In the final inning in this game, the Tappers started piling up the runs and I think we were getting a little bit nervous. In the end, we got the 3 outs and held on for our 9th win of the season.

Game # 19 - July 30th- Hurtin' Units vs. the Beer Bros.

Hurtin' Units were the visitors in this game.

Hurtin 'Units tie 13-13

Team Record- 9-9-1

Coventry Park (3)- This was probably my most fun game of the season. It was a back and forth battle (battle might not be the right word), and just when it looked like one of the teams was going to run away with it, there was a surge from the other side and it would be close again.

This was our first tie for the season, even though we have been in multiple close game all season. I believe we have lost 3 or 4 one run games, which are the reason for our .500 record, if we had even tied a few of those game we would definitely be higher in the standings.

We have a great squad this season (our record may not reflect this), and with a couple of bounces in our favor we would probably be in the top 5 or 6 in the standings. If we had Rob Hayward for the season we would definitely be up higher in the standings.  I don't mind hiding in the weeds, as the playoffs approach.

Game # 20 - August 7 - Hurtin' Units vs. Draft Kings.

Hurtin' Units were visitors.

Hurtin' Units lose 17-9

Team Record - 9-10-1

Keogh Park- In previous years the Units played the Draft Kings tough, but this game the Kings seemed to score at will and would kick our asses. Not a great night for the Units. Nice baseball picture though.

Game #21- August 8th- Hurtin' Units vs. Sons of Pitches.

Hurtin' Units were home team.

Hurtin' Units win 16-15.

Team Record- 10-10-1

Keogh Park- Not sure why I didn't finish this post, but the Units won and I'll leave it at that.

Game # 22- August 13th- Hurtin' Units vs. the Rusty Rebels.

Hurtin' Units were the home team.

Hurtin' Units lose 13-12

Team Record - 10-11-1

Coventry Park- I thought this game was the Hurtin' Units best game of the season. The Rusty Rebels were the number 1 team in league coming into this game and the Units played right with them. The game was close all the way through.

In the final inning, the Units took the field and Peter was uncomfortable playing because the sun was directly in the fielders eyes, we asked the Umpire for a couple of minutes until the sun was behind the trees or a cloud. Hughie made a big stink about this (even though it is in rules) and argued the entire time until play resumed. The top of the open inning with a 2 run lead. The would get two runners on base, with one out, and Kurt was batting, just as Kurt was about to swing Hughie jokingly says " the sun is in my eyes", Kurt checks his swing and taps back to the pitcher for an out. The Umpire said he didn't hear Hughie, the play stands. With 2 out and the tying and winning runners on base, the next Unit batter hit a short hit to Right field and Cliff J. made an excellent catch to end the game.

Game # 23- August 21st - Hurtin' Units vs. the Draft Kings.

Hurtin' Units were the home team.

Hurtin' Units lose 27-7

Team Record - 10-12-1

Keogh Part- The Units did not play a very good game, the Draft Kings basically took the lead early and coasted the rest of the way to the victory.  I can remember innings were we gave up 6 outs, not going to win very many games with a defense like swiss cheese.

I don't know how many times we hit the ball to Chuck C., but it seemed like a lot. The theme of the night was don't hit to Chuck and then we would hit to Chuck. Chuckie was a killer to the Units on this night. Chuck also had a terrific night at the plate, bashing the ball all over the field. Pete H. had a bit of a shaky night in the outfield, definitely an off night for many of our guys.

On this night we were missing Rob H., Kurt P., Mark B., and Albert P. We picked up Dave S. and Les V. as subs.

Game # 24- August 26th - Hurtin' Units vs. the Gruesome Devils.

Hurtin' Units were the home team.

Hurtin' Units win 8-3.

Team Record- 11-12-1

Keogh Park- It was the last game of the regular season and I found myself asking where did the season go? This game was a much better game than the one against the Draft Kings, where the Units could not make a play. In this game Kurt was back from holidays and Anthony played his first game since July. Both were welcome additions to the team.

This game was a defensive gem, or maybe either team could string enough hits together to score any runs. There were a lot of fly balls hit to the outfield, Jerry caught at least 5 fly balls off the bats of the Units. The Units outfield saw their fair share of fly balls out.

Going into the bottom of the sixth inning the Units were trailing by a score of 3-1. The Units would score a 7 run inning in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Pete H. homerun. The Units would shut down the Devils in the top of the inning, for their 11th win of the season and a victory to end the season.

The final standings for the regular season are:

Playoffs:

There are no playoff results posted on the T.O.T. website, but I can tell you the Hurtin' Units were not very good. The Hurtin' Units would play 4 round robin games winning only one game against the Dodge City Rounders. We did play the Dogcatchers, in one of the games (they won the championship), I believe we played the Sliders and Dusty Cleats and lost to both of those teams. At the end of the round robin, the Units were results were tied for 12th position (only 12 teams go on to play) and lost out by plus/minus of -14 runs against to the Master Batters with a -12 runs against. Master Batters were still in and the Units were finished for another season.

This season was a little inconsistent with players being injured and so inconsistent play on the field, but all and all it was a fun season, with a great group of guys on our team. For the second season in a row we lost our # 1 draft pick to an injury and that hurt us in the playoffs, but I guess that's baseball. I had a great season playing again with Pete and I look forward to the 2020 season, hoping that it will be our year for the championship. See ya on the field next year.

The Dogcatchers would go on to win the Championship, and for the first time I can remember they would not win until the middle of the following week. The games scheduled for Sunday, at Coventry would be rained out and they forced the semi-finals and finals to be played during the following week. Congratulations to the Dogcatchers.
