HURTIN' UNITS BUBBLING AFTER WOODYS WIN.

HURTIN' UNITS VS. THE HOTTUB WOODYS.

Game # 7 - June 2nd, 2016

Hurtin' Units win 19-7

Team Record  - 3-4-0

Keogh Park- In our second home game of the season we switch to our other home field. In this game we would take on the Hottub Woodys. In the playoffs last season the Hottub Woodys would be the team to end the Hurtin' Units season. The Units would lose to the Woodys on September 20th, 2015, in the semi-finals, by a score of 14-12.

In the blog back then this is what I wrote about the game.

Coventry Park- The Woodys were having an incredible run in the playoffs. In the round robin they went 3-1-0 with a plus 12. This record would get Jeff, Eddie and the boys reseeded in 4th position, and a bye in to the quarter finals.

In the quarter finals, the Woodys would take on the Rusty Rebels (a team that I thought might roll through) and win by a score of 18-9.

In our 2 regular season games, the Units would defeat the Woodys on both occasions. In game #1 of the regular season, the season opener, the Units would defeat the Woodys by a score of 13-10. In the second game vs. Woodys (game #19) the Units would defeat the Woodys by a score of 7-6.

The two regular season games were both close, so it probably should not have surprised anyone that this playoff game would be close also.
This game was a back and forth match that saw both teams take a lead at different times. The Woodys would score some late inning runs and the Units could not recover. Going in to the 7th inning the Hurtin' Units trailed by 2 runs.

In the 7th inning, myself (Jimmer) and Bikk (A.K.A Bill) would get on base and move up to 2nd and 3rd bases, but by that point we had 2 outs. Darrell would hit a hard hit line drive to Robin D. (Woody's shortstop) to end the game and end the Hurtin' Units playoff run
.

The Woodys would go on to the finals vs. the Dogcatchers. The Dogcatchers would go on to claim the 2015 Championship.

During the off season the Woodys would make wholesale changes to their roster, keeping only Fast Eddie H., Chris L., Andy G. and Jeff (the Danceman) D. for the 2016 season. All others were expendable and were either bought out, traded or free agents. The Hurtin' Units jumped at the opportunity to pick up one of those players.

The Hurtin' Units would trade for Gordy (the Turf-man) D. In exchange for Gordy, the Units would send back 3 no name players (really they had no names). Gordy D. has been nothing short of spectacular for the Units.

Hurtin' Units trade for utility player Gordy (the Turf-man) D.
 Game Time.

The weather for this game against the Hottub Woodys was fantastic. The temperature was around 21 degrees, there was a sun/cloud mix and it was a perfect night for baseball.

At game time, we had 11 Hurtin' Units players dressed and ready to take on the Woodys. The only missing player was Mark B.

In the first inning, I thought I struggled to hit the mat consistently, but with a strike out and some excellent defense behind me, I escaped only facing four batters. It looked like it might be our night when the Woodys lead off batter, (the Danceman) struck out. In the bottom of the first inning, the Hurtin' Units started off like they did in the Dogcatchers game, the Units would send nine batters to the plate and four runs came around to score.

Over the next three Innings, the Units would score another 15 runs with the assistance of the few Woody errors and bobbles. The Hurtin' Units defense was stellar and I found a nice little rhythm pitching, which kept the Woodys' players off balance. The score at the end of four innings was 19-0 Units.

In the top of the fifth inning, The Woodys would break through and score a run sending 5 batters to the plate. In the bottom of the inning, the Hurtin' Unit Bats went cold and it was over with only 4 batters going to the plate. In the sixth inning, both teams went down quickly... Units 1,2,3 and the Woodys 1,2,3.

In the open inning, the Woody's would come to life and Harley and Dan would score before a three-run blast by Lahey into the tennis courts. Jeff (the Danceman) scored the last run before Simon got out for the final out of the inning. The home team Units did not have to bat in the bottom of the inning and would defeat the Woodys by a score of 19-7 for their second win of the week.

Inside the game:

  • Ingo had a strong game with solid batting (no hits to show for it), knocking in several runs, a nice catch in left field, a great tag on Lahey at third on a relay throw, an all round strong game.
  • Clayton also had a strong game, highlighted by a excellent double play, while playing shortstop, he tagging the runner running from second to third and then threw the ball to first to get the the batter.
  • Jon made a great play off of deflection off of Jimmy R. right into his glove, throwing to first base for the out.
  • Brad S. it a ball up the center field gap for a in the park homerun.
  • Steve Lahey hit a monstrous 3 run homerun into the tennis courts in the seventh inning.
  • Ted was a vacuum in the right-center field catching at least three deep hit drives in to the field.
In the News:

On Saturday morning, as I was putting this post together, I heard that Muhammad Ali had passed away. I have some memories of this great boxer and I was saddened to hear this news.
