HURTIN' UNITS HAVE DOUBLE THE FUN...

HURTIN' UNITS vs. The BREW JAYS and The LUCKY STIFFS...(Not at the same time.)

DOUBLEHEADER NIGHT...June 21, 2011

Game # 10 vs. Brew Jays.- 7:00pm

Hurtin Units lose 13-11

Game # 11 vs. Lucky Stiffs.- 8:15pm

Hurtin' Units lose 8-2

Coventry Park- I gotta tell ya, I do like the doubleheader, I've mentioned in previous blogs that I enjoy playing this game and win or lose, I keep coming back...So on this night we get to play a lot of baseball and knock off two games on the schedule... Games 10 and 11 on the schedule, wow can you believe we are almost half way through the season and those damn Dusty Cleats are still undefeated.

The weather for these games was good, a little bit of overcast with a temperature at 24 degrees at 6:30pm...

At game time we had all 12 players suited up and eager to get playing, after all it had been almost a week between games...I have to tell you guys it has been great with this team, I have not called for a substitution yet this season and this tells me we either have a good playing enviroment or we have a lot of guys who just love playing...Maybe both!!

The 7:00pm home game is a tough one, we have to rush to the diamond, set out the bases, fill out the lineup sheet, post lineup/position sheet, warm up... Last night I forgot the lineup/position sheets...D'oh!!! The position sheet is something I really like to use, I have played on some teams and the captains would be scrambling to tell guys to where to play and have seen the confusion. I think that most guys like to know where they will be playing and when you have 12 players suited, it's easier to have positions posted so that nobody is sitting too much...Right Cal?? I've actually noticed other captains doing the same thing this season, it seems to make our lives a little easier...

So I forgot the sheets and we're are playing not only one game, but two...I guess it wasn't all that bad, I fudged (mmm fudge)the first game and the second game we used an old sheet and made a few adjustments... Game on!

Our last three games have been against the top three teams in the league, ranked in order Dusty Cleats, Lucky Stiffs and the Brew Jays. We have played all three teams pretty well and I think we are becoming a better defensive team from playing these teams. We have had a little batting trouble, but we'll come through this rough patch and when we do, I hope the defense is still playing as well as it did last night...When the Hurtin' Unit bats starting hitting like they are capable of and we can shut down the opponent's offense like we did in these two games, we will be back in the the win column...

Last night we lost both games... Brew Jays by a score of 13-11 and the Lucky Stiffs by a score of 8-2.

Game #1 vs. The Brew Jays.

This was another fun game. The Brew Jays and the Hurtin' Units were both new teams last season and we both battled for the top spot in the league, with the Units edging them out by 2 points. The Hurtin' Units beat the Brew Jays in both meetings last season, the only team to beat the Jays twice.

The game last night was another classic battle between these two teams. The Brew Jays got off to a great start, scoring 4 runs in the first inning, the Units didn't score. In the second inning the Jays scored another 2 runs and the Units countered with 2 runs. The third inning, I came in to pitch an inning and our defense slowed the Jays down, allowing only a single run, the Units scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning...The score at the end the third was 7-5 for the Jays...

In the forth inning, the Units were the only team to score, but only a single run... In the fifth inning, the Jays were stopped again and the Units put up 5 more runs on the scoresheet...In the sixth, the Brew Jays scored 3 runs and the Units were shut out...The score after 6 innings, 11-10 Hurtin' Units...

In the top of the seventh inning the Brew Jays scored 3 runs and took the lead at 13-11... The bottom of the inning, Kevin lead off with a single, then Brad flied out, Mike got a single, but unfortunately Cal S. hit in to a double play and the rally was over... Brew Jays win 13-11...Despite the loss, this was a good game...

Boxscore:        1   2   3   4    5    6    7      Total

Hurtin' Units   0   2   3   1    5    0    0       11

Brew Jays        4  2    1   0   0    3    3        13

Game # 2 vs. The Lucky Stiffs.

This game was also a fun game, we didn't score much, but still fun... It took 3 innings just to get through the lineup once and over the first 4 innings we only had 5 base runners... We finally scored a single run in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth inning... only 2 runs in the game, our lowest output this season...The Lucky Stiffs are a solid team both defensively and offensively...we were shut down by their defense, but it was the way we shut down their offense down that impresses me. The Stiffs have a lot of big bats and we held them to only 8 runs...

In the first inning, the Stiffs scored a single run, we stopped them in the second, but in the third (Bob in to pitch) the top of the Stiff's order hit us around the park, starting with 5 well placed singles in a row. The Stiffs scored 6 runs in the third inning, one more run in the fifth inning and that would be all they would need to win 8-2. This loss dropped the Hurtin' Units below .500 for first time this season with a record of 5-6-0.

Boxscore:        1   2   3    4    5    6    7      Total

Hurtin' Units    0   0   0   0    1    1    0          2

Lucky Stiffs      1   0   6   0    1    0    X          8

We have lost our last 3 games, but I really think we are playing some good baseball. The Help The Kids Play tournament is coming up, I think this tournament will be great for the Units to work out some batting woes and have a relaxed weekend of baseball.

Our next game is Tuesday June 28, 2011 at 8:15pm vs. The Torn Ligaments...
